Egypt's national team made history in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, qualifying from the group stage for the first time, after drawing with Belgium, beating New Zealand, and drawing with Iran. In the knockout phase, they faced Australia in the first round, where Egypt won on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time.

Egypt was just minutes away from the quarterfinals

In the round of 16 match, Egypt faced Argentina, where Yasser Ibrahim opened the scoring after a corner kick, before Mostafa Ziko doubled the lead in the second half. However, Argentina capitalized on their experience in the tournament to win 3-2, after scoring three goals in 13 minutes.

Mohamed Salah was the team's undisputed star, participating in all five matches, scoring a goal and providing two assists, and winning the Man of the Match award twice. After being eliminated from the tournament, Salah urged the players not to give up, saying: “I'm proud of this team. This tournament should be a starting point for further development of the national team”.
